Triple Whale vs a custom data warehouse: which one does your brand need?
Triple Whale is attribution and dashboards for Shopify brands. A custom warehouse is one source of truth across every channel. Many brands end up running both.

The short answer
If you sell mostly on Shopify and your main question is which ads are working, start with Triple Whale. It is faster and cheaper than any warehouse project and has a pixel we do not. A custom warehouse earns its cost when Amazon, TikTok Shop, wholesale, or retail are a large share of revenue and finance needs one set of numbers. We have run Triple Whale data into a client warehouse, so this is often both, not either.
How Triple Whale and a custom warehouse differ
- 01
Marketing answers vs business answers
Triple Whale tells you which ads drove orders. A warehouse tells you what you actually earned across every channel, after refunds, fees, and costs.
- 02
Days vs weeks
Triple Whale runs within days on a free or GMV-priced plan. A warehouse takes weeks and a project budget, because matching records and rules is the slow part.
- 03
Your data or theirs
Triple Whale keeps data in its managed warehouse, with export to yours as a paid add-on. A custom build lives in your own Snowflake from day one.

They answer different questions
Triple Whale is built around marketing. Its tracking pixel, attribution models, and ad-platform connectors tell you which campaigns drove orders, and its AI agents can act on that in your ad accounts with your approval.
A warehouse is built around the business. It brings orders, refunds, fees, inventory, ad spend, and costs from every channel into one model, with rules your team can read, so marketing, finance, and operations work from the same numbers.
Where packaged reporting runs out
Triple Whale is Shopify-first. Its TikTok Shop integration is US-only and leaves out platform and affiliate fees for now, and we found no NetSuite, ERP, or retail POS connectors on its integrations page. Retail and wholesale data are offered on its Enterprise plan.
Its attribution numbers are modeled estimates. That is fine for deciding where to spend, but they will not tie to the revenue in your accounting system, and they are not meant to.
The questions that send brands to a warehouse usually look like this: why do Shopify, finance, and marketing report different revenue, why does Amazon profit change after the sale, and how do we avoid counting the same order twice across channels.
Getting your data out
Triple Whale has a managed warehouse you can query with SQL inside the app. Syncing that data to your own Snowflake or BigQuery is a paid add-on. Its sync appends rows, so removing duplicates is your job, and you cannot edit the output schemas in place.
With a custom build the warehouse is yours from day one. Any BI tool, spreadsheet, or AI assistant you choose later can query it.
Cost and time
Triple Whale has a free plan and paid plans priced by annual GMV. It no longer shows consistent prices on its own site, so get a quote. Third-party snapshots put entry paid plans in the low hundreds of dollars a month for smaller brands, rising with revenue.
A warehouse project costs more up front and takes weeks, not days. Connectors are the quick part; matching records, history, and business rules take the time, as we explain in why reliable ecommerce reporting takes time. You also pay Snowflake, connector, and BI licences directly, and someone has to own the models afterward.
Running both
For one DTC apparel client, Triple Whale was one of the sources feeding the Snowflake warehouse alongside Shopify, Klaviyo, and returns data, and Power BI read from there. Marketing kept the attribution tool it liked, and the rest of the business got numbers that reconciled. The case study covers how we hardened that pipeline.
Where Triple Whale is better
- Own first-party pixel (Triple Pixel) with multi-touch attribution and post-purchase surveys out of the box; a custom warehouse build has to license or build attribution separately
- Prebuilt connectors for Shopify, Amazon, TikTok Shop and a long list of ad platforms (Meta, Google, TikTok, Snapchat, Pinterest, Microsoft and more), with no pipelines to maintain
- Industry and peer benchmarks (Automate plan), which a single brand's own warehouse cannot produce
- Sends first-party conversion data back to Meta, Google, TikTok and Klaviyo, which a reporting-only warehouse does not do without extra tooling
- Free tier and self-serve start, so the cost of trying it is far below a consultant-led Snowflake + dbt + BI project
- Moby AI agents can schedule reports and alerts and, with approval guardrails, act in connected ad platforms
- Higher tiers add marketing mix modeling, incrementality and GeoLift testing (Compass / Enterprise), which most custom builds do not include
Who should pick which
Pick Triple Whale if
- Shopify is most of your revenue and paid ads are your biggest lever.
- You want a tracking pixel, attribution, and benchmarks against other brands.
- You have no data engineer and need dashboards running this week.
- You want AI agents that can act in your ad accounts with approval.
Pick a custom warehouse if
- Amazon, TikTok Shop, wholesale, or retail are a large share of revenue.
- Finance, marketing, and operations disagree on revenue, refunds, or margin.
- You run several brands or stores and need the same definitions on each.
- You want the data in a warehouse you own, usable by any tool later.
Recommendations by team
| If you are | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify DTC brand under about $10M, ads-led | Triple Whale | Pixel, attribution, and dashboards without a data team. |
| Brand selling on Shopify, Amazon, and TikTok Shop | A custom warehouse | One order and margin model across channels, without double counting. |
| Brand with wholesale or retail revenue | A custom warehouse | NetSuite, Faire, and POS data modeled next to online sales. |
| Multi-brand portfolio | A custom warehouse | The same definitions applied to every brand. |
| Growing brand whose marketing team loves Triple Whale | Both | Keep it for attribution and load its data into the warehouse for everyone else. |

Questions people ask
Does a custom warehouse replace Triple Whale?
Yes, for reporting, if your questions are about revenue, margin, and inventory across channels. No, for attribution: we do not build a tracking pixel, so brands that rely on Triple Whale for ad decisions usually keep it and load its data into the warehouse.
Can Triple Whale send data to Snowflake?
Yes, through a paid Data Warehouse Sync add-on that supports Snowflake and BigQuery. The sync appends rows, so your team has to handle duplicates downstream.
Is Triple Whale accurate?
Its attribution is a model of which ads drove orders, which is useful for spending decisions. It is not reconciled accounting revenue, so expect it to differ from Shopify payouts and your books.
Do I need a data warehouse if I already have Triple Whale?
Not if Shopify is most of your business and the reports answer your questions. Brands usually add a warehouse when other channels grow, when finance needs reconciled margin, or when they run several brands.
How much does Triple Whale cost?
There is a free plan. Paid plans scale with annual GMV and Triple Whale does not show consistent prices on its own site, so ask for a quote. Third-party reviews describe paid plans as 12-month commitments even when billed monthly.
