Ecommerce reporting comparison

Polar Analytics vs a custom data warehouse: managed Snowflake or your own?

Polar gives every customer a managed Snowflake database with prebuilt ecommerce metrics. Here is when that is enough and when you need models you own.

The short answer

Polar is the closest packaged product to what we build: every plan includes a dedicated Snowflake database, hundreds of predefined ecommerce metrics, and a pixel. For a Shopify-led brand that wants a warehouse without a data team, it is a strong choice. A custom build makes more sense when your revenue logic, sources, or brands do not fit a predefined ecommerce model.

How Polar Analytics and a custom warehouse differ

  1. 01

    Predefined model vs your model

Polar ships hundreds of predefined ecommerce metrics. A custom build defines each rule in dbt code your team owns.

  2. 02

    Both end in Snowflake

Polar gives you a dedicated Snowflake database, with SQL access as an add-on. A custom build uses your own Snowflake account.

  3. 03

    Pixel included

Polar includes a pixel, attribution, and incrementality testing. We do not build attribution.

No free plan found; Polar MCP has a 7-day trial; third-party reports a 14-day trial (unverified on vendor site)
What drives cost
Vendor pricing page shows Core Plan (bundles Business Intelligence, AI agents and data activation, said to save 20% vs buying separately) and Custom Plan (pick modules: Business Intelligence, Incrementality Testing, Headless MCP, Klaviyo Audiences, Advertising Signals), but no dollar figures. Shopify listing: Core from $750/month, priced on online GMV, discounts for annual terms. All plans include a dedicated Snowflake database, ecommerce semantic layer, first-party pixel, unlimited users and history. Add-ons include SQL access, intraday refresh and custom connectors. An older help-center grid (likely legacy Analyze / Analyze & Enrich / Activate plans) ran from $300/month under $1.5M GMV to $2,900/month at $15M-$20M, custom above $20M, with up to 17% off annually. Third-party review (June 2026) cites $720/month under $5M GMV for Core and incrementality at about $3,200/month.

What you actually get

Polar loads your Shopify, Amazon, TikTok Shop, Recharge, and ad data into a Snowflake database dedicated to you, and puts a semantic layer of predefined metrics like contribution margin, LTV, CAC, and ROAS on top. Dashboards, AI agents, and an MCP server all read the same definitions. Polar says brands are usually running within a few days.

A custom build also ends in Snowflake, but the models are a dbt project in your repository. Every rule for refunds, fees, cancellations, bundles, and dates is code your team can read, test, and change.

Where the predefined model fits and where it does not

If your business looks like a typical Shopify DTC brand, predefined metrics save months, and Polar lets you add formula-based custom metrics on top.

The fit gets harder when the business has its own rules: bundles that need explicit SKU mappings, wholesale through NetSuite or Faire, several brands with different cost structures, or finance needing refunds reported by order cohort and by event date. NetSuite is a custom connector Polar builds on request, and SQL access to your Polar database is a paid add-on.

Attribution

Polar includes a first-party pixel, multi-touch attribution, and conversion signals sent back to ad platforms, plus incrementality tests run by its data scientists as an add-on. We do not build attribution. If a client needs it, we load results from a dedicated tool into the warehouse.

Cost

Polar no longer publishes prices on its site. Its Shopify App Store listing gives a starting price of several hundred dollars a month for the Core plan, priced on online GMV, with unlimited users and history.

A custom build has a one-time project cost plus your own Snowflake, connector, and BI bills. It is rarely cheaper in year one. It can be the better deal when you need logic Polar does not model, or when you want no per-GMV fee as you grow.

Where Polar Analytics is better

  • Dedicated Snowflake database per customer is included, so the brand gets a warehouse without building or running ELT pipelines
  • 45+ native one-click connectors including Shopify, Amazon Seller Central, Amazon Vendor Central, TikTok Shop, Recharge and the main ad platforms
  • 400+ prebuilt ecommerce metrics (contribution margin, LTV, CAC, ROAS) defined once and shared across dashboards, AI and MCP
  • Vendor claims setup in 48-72 hours versus months for a DIY warehouse build
  • First-party pixel with multi-touch attribution and ad-platform conversion API signals included, which a reporting warehouse does not provide on its own
  • Unlimited users and history on all plans, plus a dedicated success manager and Slack channel
  • Managed geo-based incrementality testing run by a Polar data scientist (add-on)
  • Missing sources can be added by its AI Data Engineer building a connector from the tool's API, or pushed into Snowflake via API/CSV in the meantime

Who should pick which

Pick Polar Analytics if

  • You are a Shopify-led brand that wants a warehouse without hiring a data team.
  • Predefined ecommerce metrics cover most of your reporting.
  • You want a pixel, attribution, and incrementality testing in the same tool.
  • You need to be up and running within days.

Pick a custom warehouse if

  • Wholesale, NetSuite, retail, or several brands are a big part of the business.
  • Finance needs revenue, refund, and margin rules your team can read and change in code.
  • You want the dbt models in your own repository, not only the data in a database.
  • You plan to use the warehouse for more than ecommerce reporting.

Questions people ask

Does a custom warehouse replace Polar?

Yes, if you need logic Polar does not model or want the dbt project in your own repository. No, if predefined ecommerce metrics cover your needs and you value having a pixel and attribution in the same tool.

Does Polar Analytics give you your own Snowflake?

Every Polar plan includes a dedicated Snowflake database. Direct SQL access to it is sold as an add-on.

Can Polar connect to NetSuite?

Not natively. Polar lists NetSuite as a custom connector it builds on request.

Polar or Triple Whale?

Both are built for Shopify brands and both have a pixel. Polar leans toward BI on a dedicated warehouse; Triple Whale leans toward attribution and AI agents acting in ad accounts. See our Triple Whale comparison for its side.
