Peel vs a custom data warehouse: retention analytics or the whole business?
Peel is deep cohort and retention analytics for Shopify and subscription brands, with Snowflake access included. Here is when it is enough and when to build.

The short answer
If your main questions are about retention, repeat purchase, and subscription LTV on Shopify and Amazon, Peel answers them out of the box and includes Snowflake data access on every plan. A custom warehouse fits better when TikTok Shop, wholesale, or ERP data matter, or when finance needs full contribution margin with shipping and fees.
How Peel Insights and a custom warehouse differ
- 01
Retention depth vs business breadth
Peel has 30+ cohort metrics, LTV, customer journeys, and RFM ready-made. A warehouse covers every channel and cost, and cohorts are one model among many.
- 02
Snowflake access on both sides
Peel includes SQL access to its Snowflake data on every plan. A custom build gives you your own Snowflake account and the models in it.
- 03
Shopify and Amazon vs everything
Peel connects Shopify, Amazon, ads, Klaviyo, and subscription apps. We found no TikTok Shop, ERP, wholesale, or POS connectors.
Pricing at a glance
Peel Insights
Unclear. Shopify acqui-hired Peel's team in May 2024 (CEO Nicolas Grasset joined Shopify); the Peel product still operates and sells plans in 2026, but who owns and runs it now is not publicly confirmed.
Peel is a retention and cohort analytics tool for Shopify brands, with heavy focus on subscription businesses. It turns Shopify, Amazon, subscription and marketing data into prebuilt cohort, LTV, segment and attribution reports, plus an AI dashboard generator called Magic Dash.
- Pricing model
- Tiered by monthly store orders
- Published starting price
- Core from $179/month billed annually ($199 month-to-month)
- Free tier
- No free tier; 7-day free trial (no credit card) that starts once data is downloaded, computed on the last year of data
- What drives cost
- Live pricing page lists Core ($179/mo annual, $199 monthly), Essentials ($449 / $499), Accelerate ($809 / $899) and Tailored (custom, 62,000+ monthly orders). Every plan includes Shopify and Amazon, ads, Klaviyo, subscription connectors, segments, cohorts, digests and Snowflake data access; plans differ by order volume, store connections, custom report credits and support level. The Shopify App Store listing shows the same three self-serve plans. PricingSaaS reported Core removed in May 2026, but Core was still on Peel's live pricing page and App Store listing when checked on 2026-11-03. Setup: Peel says connecting sources takes under 5 minutes, dashboards are built within 24 hours, and its getting-started FAQ says initial processing takes about 1-3 days depending on order volume.
Custom warehouse (Greyfield)
A Snowflake warehouse with dbt models and a BI layer (usually Sigma), built around your sources and your definitions, that you own after handover.
- Pricing model
- Project-based build, optional ongoing support
- Published starting price
- Scoped after a free consultation
- Free tier
- No
- What drives cost
- Warehouse, connector, and BI licences are billed by those vendors directly to you.

What Peel does well
Peel was built for retention questions and it shows: cohorts, LTV, segments, and customer journeys are ready the day after setup, and its AI generates dashboards from questions. Plans are priced by monthly orders, with a seven-day trial.
Shopify hired Peel’s team in May 2024. The Peel product still sells plans, but who runs it now is not publicly confirmed, so check the support and roadmap you will get.
Where a warehouse picks up
Peel includes product costs, but we could not confirm a full contribution margin with shipping, payment fees, and returns. That is what you need to compute contribution-margin LTV by acquisition channel rather than revenue LTV, and to combine Shopify, Klaviyo, and Recharge into one customer view with your own rules.
Where Peel Insights is better
- 30+ prebuilt cohort KPIs, product metrics and customer-journey views on day one, which a custom dbt + Sigma build would need to model and test
- Native connectors for six subscription platforms (Recharge, Skio, Smartrr, Awtomic, Bold, Stay.ai), a wider subscription set than most custom builds start with
- Peel states store setup takes under 5 minutes and initial data processing about 1-3 days, versus weeks for a custom warehouse
- Snowflake data access for SQL queries is included in every plan, so analysts can still go beyond the dashboards
- Entry price from $179/month (billed annually), far below consultant plus warehouse plus BI license costs
- Daily Slack/email digests, scheduled CSV reports and exportable RFM/custom segments are built in
Who should pick which
Pick Peel Insights if
- Retention and subscription LTV are your main questions.
- You sell mostly on Shopify and Amazon.
- You want cohorts ready this week with SQL access as a bonus.
Pick a custom warehouse if
- You sell on TikTok Shop, wholesale, or retail too.
- Finance needs contribution margin with shipping, fees, and returns.
- You want LTV built on margin, not revenue.
