Supermetrics vs a custom data warehouse: a data pipe or a finished model?

Supermetrics moves marketing and store data into Sheets, Looker Studio, or a warehouse. It does not model profit. Here is how it fits with a custom build.

The short answer

Supermetrics and a custom warehouse are not really alternatives. Supermetrics moves data; a warehouse build models it. For marketing reports in Sheets or Looker Studio, Supermetrics alone is often enough and costs far less. When you need profit, refunds, and orders matched across channels, Supermetrics can be the ingestion layer and the modeling still has to happen somewhere.

How Supermetrics and a custom warehouse differ

  1. 01

    Moving data vs modeling it

Supermetrics delivers data from hundreds of sources as standard tables per source. Matching orders across channels and calculating profit is left to you.

  2. 02

Sheets by default, warehouses on Enterprise

Self-serve plans deliver to Sheets, Excel, Looker Studio, Power BI, and AI chat. Snowflake, BigQuery, and its own Storage need the custom-priced Enterprise plan.

  3. 03

It can be part of a build

On Enterprise, Supermetrics can land data in your Snowflake. A custom build can use it, or another connector, to feed the models.

Pricing at a glance

Supermetrics

Independent, privately held (Helsinki, Finland; backed by Highland Europe, IVP and others). Acquired Relay42 (CDP) in June 2025.

A marketing data pipeline that moves data from ad, analytics and ecommerce platforms into spreadsheets, Looker Studio, Power BI, AI chat tools and, on the Enterprise plan, cloud warehouses or Supermetrics' own managed Storage. It now markets itself as a Marketing Intelligence Platform with AI dashboards and an MCP server.

What drives cost
Starter: $44/mo yearly or $55 monthly; 1 destination, 3 data sources, 3 accounts per source, 1 user, 4,000 AI credits/month. Growth: $177/mo yearly or $222 monthly; 1 destination, 6 sources, 7 accounts per source, 2 users, 12,000 AI credits; paid extras such as an extra destination (+$149/mo yearly) or user (+$99/mo yearly). Enterprise: custom quote; adds data warehousing (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift and others), Supermetrics Storage, transformations, Data and Platform API, custom data import, SAML SSO and data residency. Cost is driven by the number of destinations, data sources, ad or store accounts per source, and users, plus Enterprise for any warehouse delivery. Row volume is not listed as a price driver on the public page. In 2026 Starter rose from $37 to $44/mo (yearly) and per-unit Extras were added (per PricingSaaS, third-party). The vendor does not publish setup time.

What Supermetrics does well

It maintains hundreds of connectors for ad platforms, analytics, email, CRM, and ecommerce, including Shopify, Amazon Seller Central, Recharge, and TikTok Shop in early access. API pipelines are usually the most fragile part of a custom stack, and Supermetrics takes that off your hands.

Entry plans are self-serve with published prices, and it has added natural-language dashboards, an MCP server, and integrations with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot.

What still needs modeling

Its own docs list the gaps. The Shopify connector uses the product’s current unit cost rather than the cost at the time of sale, and treats a missing cost as 100% margin. Refunds are dated when processed, canceled refunds are not reported, and edited orders can create duplicates. The Amazon field list covers orders, sales, and refunds but no fee or settlement fields.

Those are exactly the problems a warehouse model exists to solve: refund date vs order date, Amazon fees that arrive after the sale, and orders counted twice across channels.

Where Supermetrics is better

  • Hundreds of maintained connectors (ads, analytics, ecommerce, email, CRM) replace hand-built API ingestion, which is usually the most fragile part of a custom stack
  • Native connectors for Shopify, Amazon Seller Central, Recharge, and TikTok Shop (early access since Feb 2026)
  • Can land data directly in Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric and others, so it can serve as the ingestion layer of a custom build rather than a replacement for it
  • Supermetrics Storage offers a centrally managed data store for teams that do not want to run a warehouse
  • Self-serve entry plans with published prices, starting at $44/month billed yearly
  • AI features include natural-language dashboards (Studio), an MCP server, and official integrations with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot
  • A low-code Connector Builder (by request) and Custom Data Import via SFTP, URL or email for sources it does not cover

Who should pick which

Pick Supermetrics if

  • Your marketing team wants ad and store data in Sheets or Looker Studio this week.
  • Your questions are about spend, ROAS, and campaign performance, not profit.
  • You want a managed feed into a warehouse you already run.

Pick a custom warehouse if

  • You need contribution margin with dated costs, fees, and refunds.
  • Orders must be matched across Shopify, Amazon, and TikTok Shop.
  • You want the business rules written, tested, and owned in dbt.

Questions people ask

Does a custom warehouse replace Supermetrics?

It can, by using a different connector tool, but it does not have to. If you already use Supermetrics Enterprise, it can feed the warehouse, and the build focuses on modeling.

Can Supermetrics send Shopify data to Snowflake?

Yes, on the Enterprise plan, which is quoted by sales. Self-serve plans deliver to spreadsheets, Looker Studio, Power BI, and AI chat tools.

Does Supermetrics calculate profit?

Not as a modeled metric. Its Shopify connector exposes cost fields, but its documentation notes it uses the current unit cost, so historical margin needs modeling downstream.
