Klar vs a custom data warehouse: contribution margin out of the box or your own model?

Klar gives European DTC brands contribution margin, retention, and attribution from €200 a month. Here is when that fits and when you need your own warehouse.

The short answer

Klar is a strong fit for European Shopify and Shopware brands that want a contribution-margin P&L, retention cohorts, and attribution with EU data hosting, set up in days. Klar itself says it has no database you can query and no custom dashboard builder yet, so brands that need SQL, custom reports, or their data joined to other systems need a warehouse.

How Klar and a custom warehouse differ

  1. 01

    Contribution margin, ready-made

Klar ships a margin waterfall with product, logistics, and payment costs on day one. A build models the same thing to your rules.

  2. 02

    No queryable database

Klar says it does not run a database you can query; data leaves through its public API. A build lives in Snowflake you query directly.

  3. 03

    Measurement included

Klar’s higher plan adds a pixel, attribution, MMM, and geo-lift tests. We do not build those.

Pricing at a glance

Klar

Klar is a Munich-based ecommerce analytics platform that combines profit reporting (contribution margins), retention and cohort analysis, and marketing measurement (first-party tracking, multi-touch attribution, MMM and geo-lift tests). It is aimed mainly at European DTC brands on Shopify, Shopware and similar storefronts.

What Klar does well

Its contribution-margin and retention views are built for how DTC operators think, and its measurement engine combines attribution, MMM, and geo-lift tests. Pricing is based on trailing twelve-month net revenue, from €200 a month, with free onboarding, no setup fee, EU hosting, and ISO 27001 certification.

Where it stops

By Klar’s own account, there is no custom dashboard builder yet, and its AI lags the category leaders. Its table view picks from predefined metrics. TikTok Shop orders arrive through the Shopify sync, ERPs push orders through its API, and Amazon syncs daily with 30 days of history, with costs added manually.

Where Klar is better

  • Prebuilt contribution margin waterfall (CM1/CM2 with COGS, logistics and payment fees) and retention views (layer cake, CLV development vs CAC, retention by channel/product/AOV) on day one, which a custom dbt + Sigma build would need to model and validate
  • Own first-party server-side pixel with multiple attribution models plus MMM and geo-lift incrementality in a unified measurement engine, which is hard to build in-house
  • Klar advertises onboarding in about 2 hours and customers cite days to a week, versus weeks to months for a custom warehouse
  • Pricing from €200/month (or €400/month with attribution) with free onboarding, no setup fee and no long-term contract, well below consultant plus warehouse plus BI license costs
  • EU data hosting, GDPR focus and ISO 27001 certification out of the box
