Funnel vs Airbyte for DTC brands: how do they compare?

Funnel is a marketing data hub that harmonizes ad data; Airbyte is an ELT tool that moves raw data. How they compare on cost, fit, and what you still build.

"We use Funnel. They're not super cheap for what they do. How does something like that compare to an Airbyte?" We hear some version of that on most calls with DTC brands that have outgrown their first reporting setup. The short answer: they solve different problems, so the price only makes sense once you know which problem you have.

We set up both for DTC brands as part of a DTC data warehouse and reporting build. If you want to see what sits on top of the ingestion layer once it works, the CAC apportionment demo runs on a synthetic DTC brand.

Key takeaways

  • Funnel is a marketing data hub: it collects ad and sales data, harmonizes field names and currencies, and sends the result to dashboards, Google Sheets, BI tools, or a warehouse.
  • Airbyte is a general ELT connector platform: it copies raw data from sources into a warehouse and leaves the modeling to you. Airbyte Core is free to self-host, and Airbyte Cloud is the managed version.
  • They're priced on different things. Funnel charges by plan tier plus Flexpoints spent on connectors, accounts, and destinations. Airbyte Cloud charges by synced volume or by reserved capacity.
  • Neither one gives you order-level finance modeling, cross-platform customer identity, or one agreed set of metric definitions. You build those either way.
  • Funnel fits when marketing owns the data and uses its harmonization every day. Airbyte fits when the warehouse is the destination and someone can own the models on top.

What is the difference between Funnel and Airbyte?

Funnel is a marketing data platform, and Airbyte is a data movement tool. Funnel's own description is a platform that collects and harmonizes data from marketing and sales sources, stores it, and sends it on. Airbyte extracts data from a source and loads it into a destination, usually a warehouse, where you transform it.

In Funnel, spend from Meta, Google, and TikTok can land in one harmonized field, currency converted. In Airbyte, each platform lands as its own raw tables, and you write the model that lines them up.

Funnel Airbyte
What it is Marketing data hub with harmonization, storage, and dashboards ELT connector platform that moves raw data
How you run it Managed service Self-hosted Core (free) or managed Cloud
Who it's built for In-house marketing teams and agencies Data teams loading a warehouse
Transformation Built-in field rules, custom metrics, currency conversion None beyond loading; you model in the warehouse
Destinations Dashboards, Looker Studio, Google Sheets, BI tools, warehouses (Snowflake on Enterprise) Warehouses and databases, plus others such as Google Sheets
Pricing model Plan tier plus Flexpoints; data volume doesn't change the price Credits by synced volume (Standard, Plus) or Data Workers capacity (Pro)
Extras Funnel Measure add-on for MMM, MTA, and incrementality testing None; measurement is up to you

Funnel facts are from Funnel's pricing page, as of November 3, 2026. Airbyte facts are from Airbyte's pricing page, as of November 2026.

Is Funnel just an ETL tool?

Not quite. Funnel does extract and load, which is why it gets compared with ETL and ELT tools. It also harmonizes the data, which a plain loader doesn't do.

That harmonization is work you'd otherwise build yourself: shared field definitions across ad platforms, currency conversion, and budgets and targets. Funnel also has native dashboards, an AI agent, and an add-on measurement product.

So the question isn't whether Funnel is an ETL tool. It's whether you use the parts of Funnel that aren't ETL.

What does each one cost?

Each vendor prices on something different, so compare the shape of the bill before the number. These are list prices from each vendor's site, and your quote may differ.

Funnel (as of Nov 3, 2026) Airbyte (as of November 2026)
Entry plan Starter from $300/month billed annually Standard from $20/month, with 5 credits (about 1 GB of syncs)
Next plan Business from $600/month billed annually Plus from $189/month for 40 credits
Top plans Enterprise, custom (adds Snowflake export) Pro (capacity-based Data Workers) and Enterprise Flex, both custom
What makes it grow Flexpoints: 50 per connector, 5 per account, 150 per visualization destination, 300 per warehouse destination Synced volume on Standard and Plus, reserved capacity on Pro
Free option 14-day trial Airbyte Core, free to self-host under the Elastic License 2.0

Funnel's bill grows with ad accounts and destinations, not order history. Airbyte's grows with how much you sync and how often, and self-hosting swaps the subscription for servers and someone's time. Funnel's Starter plan has no BigQuery, Power BI, or Tableau output, and Snowflake needs Enterprise, so price the plan you'd actually need.

What does Funnel piping into Google Sheets get you?

Funnel piping into Google Sheets is a reasonable first setup. Funnel lists Google Sheets and Looker Studio as destinations on every paid plan, and a marketing team can get harmonized spend into a sheet without an engineer.

It strains when the sheet becomes the place where metrics are defined, and the same ratio gets calculated three ways. Google caps a spreadsheet at 20 million cells, and daily ad data by campaign adds up faster than you'd think. We cover the failure modes in why your Google Sheets marketing dashboard keeps breaking.

Airbyte also has a Google Sheets destination, but its own docs say to use it only for small, non-production cases. Airbyte is built to load a warehouse.

When does each one fit a DTC brand?

Funnel fits when marketing is the main user and the data is mostly ad platforms. Airbyte fits when the warehouse is the source of truth and the data includes orders, subscriptions, and finance.

Funnel is the better fit when

  • Marketing owns reporting and uses Funnel's harmonized fields and dashboards every day.
  • You run many ad platforms and accounts, and keeping field names in line is most of the work.
  • You want MMM or multi-touch attribution from the vendor that already holds your marketing data, through the Funnel Measure add-on.
  • Nobody on the team will own warehouse models.

Airbyte is the better fit when

  • The goal is one warehouse with Shopify orders, Recharge subscriptions, Klaviyo, Amazon, and ad spend side by side.
  • Someone, in-house or a partner, will own the models that turn raw tables into reporting tables.
  • You'd rather pay for data movement and build harmonization once, in the warehouse, where finance can use it too.
  • You need sources Funnel doesn't cover. In our November 2026 check, Airbyte listed NetSuite and Funnel didn't. Funnel listed TikTok Shop and Airbyte didn't. See the connector table in our ingestion guide.

Plenty of brands keep both for a while: Funnel for marketing's day-to-day views, Airbyte or another loader for the warehouse. That's fine if each metric has one owner.

What do you still have to build with either tool?

Both tools get data to a destination. Neither one decides what your numbers mean.

Layer Funnel Airbyte What it involves
Ingestion Included Included Connectors, schedules, freshness alerts
Marketing harmonization Included You build it One spend field across platforms, currencies, campaign naming
Order and finance modeling You build it You build it Net revenue after refunds, discounts, fees, COGS, contribution margin
Customer identity You build it You build it One customer across Shopify, Recharge, Amazon, and Klaviyo
Semantic layer Partly, inside Funnel You build it One definition of CAC, MER, and subscriber counts that every tool reads
BI and dashboards Included for marketing views You choose a BI tool Dashboards people trust and use

We found no profit or COGS model in Funnel's pages as of November 3, 2026, so contribution margin still needs custom work. For identity, see how to track a customer across platforms. For definitions, see what a semantic layer is.

This is why "they're not super cheap for what they do" can be true and still miss the point. If Funnel only moves data for you, a loader costs less. If it replaces harmonization and dashboards you'd otherwise build, compare it with the cost of building those.

Frequently asked questions

Is Airbyte cheaper than Funnel?

On list price, Airbyte's entry plans start lower: Standard is $20/month and Plus $189/month, against Funnel Starter at $300/month billed annually, as of November 2026. But Airbyte only moves raw data, so add the cost of building harmonization and models before you compare.

Can Funnel send data to Snowflake?

Yes, but Funnel's pricing page lists Snowflake export on the Enterprise plan only, as of November 3, 2026. BigQuery and Redshift are on Business. See Funnel vs a custom data warehouse for more.

Can Airbyte load data into Google Sheets?

Yes, Airbyte has a Google Sheets destination. Its docs say to use it only for small, non-production cases, and it writes every value as a string.

Do I need a data warehouse if I already use Funnel?

Not for marketing reporting alone. You need one when you want orders, refunds, subscriptions, COGS, and ad spend in one place with shared definitions, because Funnel isn't built for order-level finance reporting.

What to do next

Write down what you actually use Funnel for today: data movement, harmonization, dashboards, or measurement. That list tells you whether a loader would replace it or only part of it.

To see what a warehouse does once the data is in, try the CAC apportionment demo, or book a call with Linus to talk through your sources.
